Breaking Point: Local News is in Crisis. What Can We Do to Save It?
Presented by the Friends of the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers
As corporate-owned chain and hedge funds take over community newspapers, who will be left to tell the stories that matter? From environmental degradation to municipal corruption, from development and zoning to the mundane details of neighborhood life, local journalism is crucial for civic engagement and for holding those in power accountable.
Northeastern journalism professor and GBH News contributor Dan Kennedy will talk about the forces that brought local news to its current low ebb, as well as why a new generation of independent media are succeeding. He’ll also discuss efforts at the state level to point the way toward a better future.
A panelist on Beat the Press, Dan Kennedy writes the blog Media Nation and is the author of The Return of the Moguls: How Jeff Bezos and John Henry Are Reinventing Newspapers for the Twenty-First Century. In addition to media and political commentary, Kennedy writes the New England Muzzle Awards, an annual feature in which he turns a spotlight on those who diminish free speech. Kennedy is a professor of journalism at Northeastern University.
This program is supported, in part by a grant from the Danvers Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
